Region Unlock Support Table

The following shows real-world performance for major streaming platforms in key regions. Platform policies change with licensing agreements, so unlock availability may vary — actual connections are what matter.

What Unlocking Actually Means

Streaming platforms decide which regional content library to show based on the visitor's exit IP. With Netflix, a US IP sees the US catalog, a Japan IP sees the Japan catalog. This check happens on every request, regardless of where the account was registered. The same account will see completely different home screens and libraries on different regional routes.

NZVPN's international routes swap your exit IP for a local IP in the target region. When you connect to a US route, Netflix sees a request from a US IP and returns the US catalog. That's what unlocking really is: not breaking the platform, but making your request look like it comes from the target region. The region attribute of a route's exit IP determines which region's content you can see.

Platforms periodically adjust their IP risk controls. NZVPN keeps routes and exit IPs updated, so stability holds in most cases, but individual platforms may fluctuate at certain times. We don't promise permanent unlocks, but we do keep improving route quality. If an unlock fails, switching to another route in the same region usually fixes it.

Native IP vs Residential IP

Streaming platforms can tell IP types apart. Datacenter IPs come from cloud providers and IDC exits, so they're more likely to be flagged as proxies. Native IPs are long-term allocations from local ISPs and carry more trust. Residential IPs come from home broadband exits and are also less likely to trigger risk controls. The difference lies in the IP's registration ownership and usage history, which platforms weigh together.

Some NZVPN routes use native IP or residential IP exits. When choosing a route, prefer ones marked "Native IP" or "Residential IP" — unlock success rates are usually higher. For the exact IP type of each route, see the route list on the servers page. If you find a route flagged on a platform, switching to another native IP route often restores access immediately.

Bandwidth Requirements for 4K & Dolby Vision

Different quality levels need different bandwidth. Based on public platform recommendations and typical bitrates:

QualityBandwidth requirementData per hour
1080p5~8 Mbps~1.5–2.5 GB
4K HDR15~25 Mbps~3–6 GB
4K Dolby Vision25~40 Mbps~6–10 GB

Actual numbers vary with content bitrate. For 4K Dolby Vision, expect about 6–10 GB per hour — the ¥28/mo plan with 500 GB covers roughly 50–80 hours. If you mostly watch 1080p, the ¥9.9/mo plan with 60 GB is enough for everyday use.

Routes can get congested during peak hours, reducing actual bandwidth. For stable 4K playback, IEPL dedicated routes are recommended.

General troubleshooting steps:

  1. Switch to another route in the same region and reconnect
  2. Clear browser cache and cookies, or use private mode
  3. Make sure device time and region settings are correct
  4. Wait 10–15 minutes and try again

Streaming Unlock FAQ

Will the unlock work forever?
Platform policies change, so we don't promise permanent unlocks. NZVPN keeps routes updated and is stable in most cases, but individual platforms may fluctuate short-term. If that happens, switch routes or wait for the platform's risk control to lift.
How do I know if the unlock worked?
Open the target platform and check the region indicator. On Netflix, the "Account" page shows your current region; Disney+ shows region-specific content on the home screen; YouTube Premium's "Membership" page shows the current region.
Does it work on mobile?
Yes. Both iOS and Android clients support it. Connect to the corresponding regional route and the streaming apps on your phone will show the target region's content. Mobile and desktop use the same routes — no extra setup needed.
Is the data enough?
4K uses about 3–6 GB per hour. The ¥9.9/mo plan with 60 GB suits everyday 1080p use; the ¥28/mo plan with 500 GB suits 4K. Data lasts until used up and never expires.
Why do I occasionally get disconnected?
Peak-hour route congestion, unstable Wi-Fi, and platform risk controls can all cause brief disconnects. Switching routes or changing network environments usually restores the connection. If disconnects persist, submit an online ticket.
